There is always an optimal level of training for any athlete. It is fine line between training hard to get a performance benefit and training too hard (known as overtraining) and getting injured and making yourself ill. Coaches and support staff work hard together to ensure a training cycle for their athlete ensure they reach peak performance for competition. Often athletes get injured when their body isn’t ready for the training or they have a particular weakness (i.e. tightness in their shoulder) which over time and heavy training leads to injury. Also periods of heavy training and travelling (i.e. via aeroplane) to competitions makes athletes more susceptible to colds etc., so they have to be extra careful with hygiene and nutrition to ensure they avoid illness. But the optimal level of training is different from person to person.
