I was always encouraged to pursue things I was interested in by my family, and I was also lucky to have some great teachers. I had a super maths teacher (who also taught me science at one point) whose way of teaching was much more than preparation for passing exams, she really encouraged us to think and to understand what we were doing, and to explore different possibilities in maths and science. She was really super and there were many in her class who went on to work in science, maths and medicine. We were also very lucky to get a visit from a female professor of biochemistry when we were about 13 or 14, and her talk showed us how varied a science career could be, and the effect it could have on people’s lives.

At School my Dad was my inspiration. He always taught me to work hard and do what you enjoy. Although he isn’t in Science, that didn’t matter as he inspired me to follow my interests. My PE teachers at A level were great and showed me how science can be applied to sport.
