I asked my family endless questions when I was little about how and why things worked and behaved as they did, I always wanted to find things out. I was sporty in school and played a lot of different sports across the years, and loved science and numbers. I also always wanted to help and fix people. A visit to our school from a female Professor of Biochemistry showed me how varied a career in science could be, and the difference it could make to people’s lives, and this confirmed to me that science was a definite career choice. When I started looking at different university courses, I found sport science was an option which could combine all my interests in one. Even though I was also interested in being a physiotherapist, I found my sport science degree ended up much more relevant to the things I was interested in, and I got much more detail on the topics and problems I really wanted to know more about. Sport science has lots of different applications – you can work in a lab, teach, work with Olympic medallists or work with people learning to walk again – its very varied and has lots of options within it for people to specialise, and that’s what really appealed to me.

My favourite subjects at School were Human Biology and PE. Sport Science enabled me to combine these two interests and the breadth of the topic area is vast. During my undergraduate degree we studied Biomechanics, Psychology and Physiology, which form the three main areas of Sport Science. I was always most interested in Physiology and that has lead to my career to date. As Laura Anne mentioned Sport Science can lead to a variety of jobs from elite sport to healthcare, depending where your interests lie.
