Yes I enjoyed Science at school. Well both my husband and I are Scientists, so they may like Science too! But if they didn’t enjoy it and wanted to take a different career path, that’s absolutely fine. They would not be forced to be a Scientist because we are. Science can be used in many different ways and is often used in daily life, so it is important to have a good basic understanding.

If I’m totally honest, in the early part of secondary school Science wasn’t my favourite subject. I often found it a bit boring – perhaps that was the syllabus! But I was always asking questions and I liked Maths too so I knew I had a logical brain. As I grew older I became more interested in science both in school and outside school, for example by reading books and watching documentaries. By the time I got to GCSEs and 6th form I was starting to really enjoy science and knew I wanted to study something to do with science at university.

I would definitely encourage my kids (if/when I have kids) to take an interest in science as I think it’s really awesome to be able to understand and relate to the world around you and even just ask good questions and be able to find out the answers in a logical way! But I wouldn’t push them into a career in science as I think that everyone should have the chance to do something they enjoy or are passionate about. Having said that, I am a scientist, my parents are scientists and my boyfriend is an engineer so I think my kids could end up having quite a science-y upbringing…

I was fascinated by science at school, it did science at GCSE and A-level. I think it helped having inspiring teachers who were passionate about their subjects. I have s on who has been to University already. He completed a degree in Motorsports engineering. Science was therefore the background to all of his studies and now to his work which is in the field of robotic engineering. I tried not to be the pushy parent but both my wife ( who is also a scientist) and I ensured that he did science at both GCSE and then A-level.

I enjoyed science and maths in school, and it’s something I’d like to encourage any of my kids in the future to be interested in too as it’s such a useful subject to know about and having a grasp of the basics is important for everyday life. In saying that, if they aren’t interested then I wouldn’t force them into it, but as I’m dreadful at art and music I don’t have any skills in those areas to pass on…

I enjoyed Science at school, and was fortunate to have very good teachers who made the subject engaging and applicable. If I were to have children I would encourage them to do well wherever they found their passion. If that was Science then I would be more than happy.
