I used to do a lot of coaching with U16 and U18 girls hockey at international level. One of the things I thought most important was to encourage and inspire them to stay involved in sport even if they didn’t become senior international players because it’s such as good thing to do for your own health and wellbeing, and to give you a break from studying and worrying about exams. Sport and exercise is a great thing to be involved in as you get older as you meet lots of new people and make new friends which is important if you move to a new place for example. We also taught them about healthy eating, nutrition, sleep and psychology. All my coaching has been with this age group so yes, I hope I’ve inspired them to stay fit and healthy!

In my current role this isn’t my main focus of my work but through activities such as “I’m a Scientist” I hope to inspire the next generation of scientists and teach the importance of a health diet and active lifestyle. With daily life becoming busier and less active it has become even more important to spread the message that a balanced diet and active lifestyle is key to stay healthy and reduce your chances of getting ill.
