My favourite thing about Sports Science is that you can often immediately see how the science can be applied to make performance better, or enhanced. The various fields in Sports Science have a very practical application, whereas some sciences can be more abstract.
I love doing this kind of work, having the chance to pass on my knowledge and hopefully inspire a new generation. I am also excited about observing outcomes of studies, especially when we use an intervention such as training or an ergogenic aid and watching what happens to both performance and underlying physiology.
Definitely learning new things – new ways of doing things in the lab, new ways of looking at my results, having a chat with a student or someone I work with and learning to think about something in a new way. I love when all of this comes together and we then discover something new in the lab that can help to make a real difference to someone’s ability to walk or run or to take part in sport, e.g. should we change how big your muscles are or how you use them.
