I’ve always enjoyed talking about science to the schools and public and really enjoyed doing it with different groups in my old university, so was looking for opportunities to continue that when I came to Loughborough. I had heard of this competition earlier in the year and was delighted when over the summer the call came out for interested scientists to take part!
I was 16 years old and got the chance to study for a GCSE in Sports studies. I suddenly realised that science could be really exciting and not just working with test tubes and patria dishes.
Nice question! I’m always interested in how we as scientists can share and promote our work outside the scientific community and I have particularly enjoyed doing schools outreach projects in the past.
I have a couple of friends who have done I’m a Scientist in the past (not in sports science but in different zones) and they both said it was a really fun experience. So I signed up to the mailing list a while back and then when the call came out for the November event I thought it was a good time for me to apply!
Good question, I found out about I’m a Scientist when they approached British Canoeing to see if any athletes were available to take part. I volunteered because I think it is important that everyone can find out how much we use science on a daily basis in sport!
I knew a couple of other scientists who had taken part previously and they had mentioned how much they enjoyed talking to students about different aspects of science. I signed up a couple of months ago and was delighted to get picked to take part.
