Not really! Both of my parents studied science at university. My mum actually had some trouble finding a job in science because back in the 1970s some companies wouldn’t employ women. But nowadays the opportunities very equal for men and women. So if you are a girl and like science, then go for it!

Definitely not. I went to an all girls school so we were always encouraged that we could do anything. You should do what you enjoy regardless of what gender you are. There are definitely many more females in Science nowadays then there used to be.

Not at all. All of the science teachers in my school with the exception of one were female, and we had a great visit from a female professor of biochemistry when I was in secondary school. There are now plenty of females working in science, in all sorts of roles and areas of science so I completely agree with Helen, if you’re a girl and interested then you should go for it!

Like Katy, I went to an all girls school where we were taught that as a woman no field of work was closed to you. Science was always a large and vibrant faculty. I never thought that science was something that was only open to men.
